There’s an important joint in the body that often gets overlooked, despite how much work it does. This joint is called the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. The TMJ is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull, and so is responsible for biting, chewing, speaking, singing, and more.
Unfortunately, it’s common to experience pain or discomfort in the TMJ. In these situations, you may be experiencing TMD—a temporomandibular disorder. Visit your dentist as soon as possible to resolve this pain quickly and stop TMD from developing any further!
What Are the Symptoms of TMD?
Feeling pain directly in the joint of your jaw is a distinct symptom of TMD, but TMDs can often be felt in other parts of the body as well. Any of the following might be a sign of TMD, especially if you’re experiencing more than one symptom at once:
- Jaw pain.
- Frequent headaches, especially tension headaches.
- Pain that radiates from the jaw down the neck.
- Popping, clicking, or locking jaws.
- A habit of grinding or clenching teeth, especially at night.
How Is TMD Treated?
In most cases, TMD is the result of habitually clenching or grinding teeth in a way that strains the jaw joint. TMD can also occur after an injury, or might not seem to have a cause at all.
However your TMD came to be, we are committed to helping you resolve it! In many cases, all it takes is one of our custom-made mouthguards to start easing your jaw pain and easing the strain on your jaw.
Our mouthguards will keep your molars from making direct contact with each other. This means much less tension and friction between your jaws, which will relax the joint and quickly resolve uncomfortable TMD symptoms.
